Porto Alegre

I always wanted to visit Brazil. This is all Rio de Janeiro and the hot climate, as it seemed to me before. The last word of the previous sentence is the key. Because I did not know anything about Brazil until I came to work and study in Porto Alegre. And as I found out, I did not let this country out of my thoughts more.

Do you want to feel like a real Brazilian, see with your own eyes the snowfall in July, live the entire winter without heating (for two months at temperatures from -5 ° C to +7 ° C overboard), on weekends to buy healthy and cheap goods in Uruguay, have lunch for 4 USD in all-inclusive national cuisine restaurants, and is it even possible to get an education at one of the best universities in Brazil?

If you have already bought magnets, ran through all the tourist attractions in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, realized that everywhere there is not always carnival and monkeys, but much more interesting, welcome to Porto Alegre - the capital of the southern state of Brazil.

How to get there

From Russia to Porto Alegre can only be reached by plane with two transfers from Moscow or St. Petersburg.

By plane

“Oh, how expensive,” I thought in the process of choosing air tickets. Because the approximate cost of flights in both directions from 1000 USD (price options for current dates can be found here). Before the flight, be sure to rest: you will be on the road for about a day. I always couldn’t get enough sleep before the flight, and often little kids sat on the plane with me and screamed all the way. So upon arrival, the squeezed lemon was kinder and more cheerful than me. I hope they understood the hint.

Rarely, but you can find offers from 500 USD in two directions from Moscow or St. Petersburg. Inside Brazil, you can buy a plane ticket from Rio or Sao Paulo to Porto Alegre from 120 USD round trip.

I will emphasize the airlines that I flew myself. I really liked Swiss, Alitalia, British Airways. Brazilian friends recommend: Emirates, Turkish Airlines.

Remember, you can fly from Russia from Moscow and St. Petersburg, then you will transfer to another country (depending on the airline), and then one more time you will transfer to Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro directly to the destination city - Porto Alegre.

Tip: If you are going to Brazil for the first time and immediately to Porto Alegre, stop in Rio de Janeiro for a few days and then buy a separate ticket to Porto Alegre.

By bus

If you are in Buenos Aires (Argentina), you can drive to Porto Alegre in 18 hours and the price is from 50 USD. From Montevideo (Uruguay) in 10 hours and from 80 USD per ticket.

For a year of work and study in Brazil, I tried to travel on different types of transport: airplane, hitchhiking, 30-hour bus route, car. Buses are of course cool and cheaper, but the roads are often serpentine and it is physically difficult. However, if time allows and you want to save money, you can travel all over Brazil and the countries of Latin America closest to it by bus.

When is the season. When is the best time to go?

I hasten to tell you that in Porto Alegre there are all four seasons - summer, autumn, winter and spring. Summer is from December to March, autumn is from March to June, winter is from June to August, and then spring. We live in a different hemisphere, so the opposite is true. It is cold (yes, very) from June to September, and hot from December and, to be honest, until June.

The best time to travel is spring or early fall. Therefore, you can freeze in Russia in the winter. Summer is at your discretion, if you want + 38-45 ° С outside the window and normally transfer the heat - I recommend. In spring and autumn, the temperature is kept at + 23-30 ° C. For me, this is the buzz. By the way, Porto Alegre is not the most tourist city, so the prices for the season / out of season differ only for fruits. And if you still want adventure in the winter, take winter clothes and autumn boots from Russia :).

One of the strongest cultural shocks in Porto Alegre for me was the climate. I did not even suspect what zero degrees are without heating the house. Every time I said: “I am cold, I am freezing from the inside” - none of the Brazilians believed. "You are a girl from Siberia"?

If you do not want to bite your teeth for days or die from the heat - early autumn (March, April) or spring (September, October, November) is the ideal time for trips.

Porto Alegre in summer

In the summer months, the temperature is around + 35-42 ° С. If in January it’s really hard, then in February you don’t quite die of the heat, but every day from time to time anyway.

If you came to celebrate the New Year or look at the Brazilian carnival, there is no choice - stock up on cold water, tea Shimarrau (we will talk about it later) and air conditioning in the room, but even this will not be enough.

There are many tourists in the city in the summer, especially from the nearest countries of Latin America. They have been living soul to soul with heat since childhood and do not pay attention to it.

Porto Alegre in the fall

In autumn, leaves fall and everything and everyone is preparing for winter, but no less beautiful in the beauty of the environment and the number of degrees “overboard”. The weather is wonderful + 23-25 ° C, and if you love our Indian summer, you can’t stay indifferent at this time.

Most of all I was struck in the fall by the winter clothes of Brazilians at the temperature of normal Moscow summer. You walk down the street in a summer dress, the leaves fall, and local students in warm boots and jackets walk alongside. What is not a cultural shock?

Porto Alegre in spring

I adore spring, and even more so in Porto Alegre. This is the best time to travel here. There are many tourists, the street is warm, but not hot. Porto Alegre is a city of parks and greenery. In spring, there is natural and temperature beauty (+ 20-28 ° С). Everything blooms, the parks are green and beautiful, music plays, open concerts of local groups and free theaters take place.

Porto Alegre in winter

Even now, I remember the winter and goosebumps from the eternal cold and the inability to warm up. The temperature in winter drops to -5 ° C. Fur coats and no heating. There are also few tourists, mainly representatives of other Latin American countries who are hungry for cold.

It gets colder in May (temperatures can vary from +35 to +10 ° С), and at the beginning of June your house will turn into a glacier with a lot of blankets. In July, it may even snow. Remember: neither heating, nor even normal heaters are present, and windows - that they are, that they are not - are blown through and through in hostels, in hotels and even in expensive houses. Tea and hot showers are the only salvation from the Brazilian winter.

I asked friends of Brazilians why there is no heating. "Why? Cold only three months, the rest of the time it’s hot and it’s just not profitable for us to install a heating system."

Areas. Where is better to live

I lived in several areas of Porto Alegre. Let's see what suits you.

  • Cidade baixa is one of the most popular areas in PoA. Bars, restaurants, cafes, hotels. Mostly students live here, as one of the UFGRS federal university campuses is located very close by. What well? Nearby is my favorite park - Redensau. Easy walk to the center. Of the minuses - noisy. If you are in the city for a short time - a great place.

  • Centro Histórico. Closer to the center - only the center. If in the previous area it is noisy, then here is the local Times Square. People-people-cars-cars. Is it worth living here? Too noisy for me.

  • Petrópolis. Harmoniously ideal area for renting an apartment for a long time. Green, calm, close to the center. What else is needed? I recommend for a short trip or a long stay in the country.

  • Bela Vista. Rich people live here. To go to the center for about 20 minutes by bus, but the cozy and harmonious atmosphere of the area is addictive. I recommend for a long stay. I will also note the areas Moinhos de Vento and Menino Deus.

  • If you come for a short time and calmly relate to noise: choose Cidade baixa - Not far from the center and with lots of entertainment per square meter.

What are the prices for vacation

Are you a student, traveler or businessman? Did you come for a couple of days or a few months?

Housing

In hostels you can stay for 8-10 USD per night, in hotels - from 30 USD to plus infinity per night. You can rent a room / small one-room apartment from 350 USD per month. If you want to rent high-quality expensive housing for a long period of time, apartments in the above areas, except for Centro and Cidade Baixa, will cost you from 400 USD per room. It was more difficult for me to live in the central areas due to the endless construction, constant noise and screams of local party-goers.

It’s convenient to choose and book accommodation at Bucking. You can see the prices for apartments here, and compare the cost of hotel rooms at this link.

Important: Brazilians are very hospitable people and often receive guests for free at home. I used this repeatedly - much better and more distinctive than in hotels. Use the services of guest networks if you are interested in a free vacation in the circle of Brazilians.

Food

I already noted that Porto Alegre is a city of food and restaurants "eat as much as you want" from 4 USD for lunch. You can have a bite to eat hot corn, sweet shurro, a popular lemon torta de limao pie on the street from 1 USD.

Tip is simple: try all possible places with a buffet libre. Such a variety of inexpensive and tasty food in Brazil is nowhere to be found except Porto Alegre. Do not be afraid to go to places that are "not very" in appearance. Often, owners can fry different types of meat especially for you and take genuine care, although pay only 3 USD. In expensive restaurants, the price of a buffet libre reaches $ 40 for lunch.

Transport

A bus ticket costs 2 USD. Metro - as much. The buses are comfortable, driving is a pleasure. Taxi Uber can cost 3-4USD minimum.

I don’t understand why you need to rent a car - there are expensive parking lots (from 3 USD), and it’s also difficult to find a place, especially in the center.

Trips out of town

Everyone can visit the chocolate city of Gromada for one day and natural Felis for 40-50 USD (transportation costs, snack and chocolate souvenirs). I will tell in more detail below.

The main attractions. What to watch

"Green" - that's what the Brazilians call Porto Alegre. Why? Here lives and smells one of the most beautiful streets in the world (I didn’t think up, people say) "Rua goncalo de carvalho" (Gonzalo de carvalho street). To be honest, it looks more like a forest than a street, in terms of "nature per square meter." Below look at this property of the city.

There are two football stadiums and two super clubs in Porto Alegre - Inter and Gremio. The first appear on the field in red T-shirts, the second in blue. “Inter”, according to residents of Porto Alegre, is a team of ordinary people, whose football players came mainly from poor families, “Gremio” - on the contrary. In Porto Alegre there is UFRGS, Federal University of Rio Grande De Sul, one of the best in Latin America and much, much more.

Top 5

  • Cidade de Baixa (Cidade de Baixa) - An area located in the central part of the city. The number of bars and restaurants cannot be counted even by the most ancient inhabitants of Porto Alegre. Regardless of the day of the week, it is noisy and fun here, only on Sunday morning silence and grace. Brazilian music is playing in one restaurant, young couples are dancing sertanierzha, in another - couples are hugging by candlelight, and from the bar opposite the cry of angry or happy fans is heard: “Goal!”. In this area I spent a lot of time, even lived for six months. It’s impossible to sleep. Center - what do you take from it? :)
  • The Bright Museum of Ibere Camargo, southern part of the city. In Brazil, there is the foundation of Iber Camargo, an outstanding Brazilian artist. In honor of him, a free museum was created in the city of Porto Alegre. It is located in the middle of the road between the hill and the motorway overlooking the Guiabu River. And next to it, as if “under the arm of a museum”, the sweetest, in my opinion, cafe in the city, located opposite the riverbank.
  • Casa de Cultura Mario Quentana (House of Culture). A beautiful architectural ten-story house with a vintage staircase and art that lives inside: a cinema, a theater, a museum, a music club, and at the very top under the dome there is a cafe overlooking the whole city. In my opinion, the most romantic place in Poa (Porto Alegre). Every day, live music and your favorite musicians remind you of the most important thing with your work. You can choose a place inside the cafe under the roof or sit under a dome and a fresh breeze.
  • Mercado Publico (central market). In the city, in the very center, stands and flaunts the famous Porto Alegre market. Remember that in Brazil on Sundays you have to work hard to find an open store, pharmacy, kiosk - anything other than a shopping center? The Brazilian people go shopping and shopping on weekdays and on Saturdays. Mercado Publico - An indoor and very cheap market with everything in the world (fruits, food, seafood, souvenirs and restaurants). There are so many entrances and exits that even after living a year in the city, I could not remember where and what is and where to turn right. One thing I can say for sure - everything that is sold here is much cheaper and sometimes even tastier than in any other places in the city. You will be in Porto Alegre. And what delicious rolls are there in the restaurant "Japesca Suchi"!
  • Redenção (Redensau). The most beloved and sincere place in the city. A large, beautiful, crazy and kind park. I’ll tell you more later.

Beaches. Which are better

There are no beaches in the city. Basically, PoA residents fly to Rio de Janeiro or other cities closer to the North of the country. However, there is a beach nearby. Just 100 km from Porto Alegre and ... welcome to Atlantis - a sunny spot on the Atlantic coast.

Atlantis resembles an elite holiday village, where most of the houses are guarded and seven fences the size of two floors! Small "Brazilian Ruble". But, far away ... but in the city there is a beautiful river Guyaba, next to which you can always meet the sunset or dawn.

Churches and temples. Which are worth a visit

I do not have the right to make myself an expert in churches and temples, but it is worth visiting at least these two temples:

  • Igreja Nossa Senhora Das Dores. The oldest church in the city, which is still open to the public.
  • Metropolitan Cathedral. The beautiful Catholic Church Cathedral, located in the city center.

Museums Which are worth a visit

I have already mentioned and described two wonderful museums - Fundacao ibere camargo and Casa de cultura Mario Quentana, I’ll add another place that you’ll definitely like.

Usina do Gasometro

Here once there was an operating power station, turned into a museum. There is also an observation deck, as well as one of the busiest evening spots in the city: 1 km and 400 m - the length of a running track along the coast of the Guyaba River. Locals here run, ride bicycles and rollers, a skateboard, walk at a fast pace, swing on simulators specially equipped by the city authorities for sports.

Parks

Porto Alegre is called the green city due to the large number of greenery and parks.

  • My favorite Redencao. There are not many people on weekdays in Redensau and you can safely take a plaid and your favorite book, enjoy unity with nature. On weekends, Brazilians, under the rhythms of incendiary Brazilian music, practice capoeira (a national martial art in which young people in white robes dance, play with each other and deliver invisible blows to the enemy). At the same time as capuurists, somewhere nearby in the green and large trees of the park, other people sit on the grass and sing along with the guitar, the third meditate, the fourth shout out the anthem of their favorite football clubs, and not the Khukhra Muhra, but in whole crowds dressed in the form of their team, at the same time, they dance and samba around the park, gathering hundreds of spectators. Here they stage a manifesto for health, against the new law of poverty or for true love - as in the case of football - a friendly crowd and often music. At this time, in another part of the parks, someone is watching or taking part in a performance that unexpectedly happened. Want to see life - to you in the park.
  • The second most popular Moinhos de Mento Park. "Windmills Park", with a second name - Parcao ("Big Park"). The name Moinhos de Vento Park was given based on the existence of a working mill earlier in the area. On site there are exercise machines, tennis courts and ping-pong tables, soccer fields, tracks for roller-skating and ice-skating. The administrative building of the park is surrounded by an artificial waterfall and a pond in which geese, ducks, fish and turtles swim. Moinhos de Vento found a place for the library. The building is always open for recreation, seminars and educational games.

Tourist streets

  • In the city there is Rua (street) Gonçalo de carvalho, popularly called "Rua mais bonita do mundo" - the most beautiful, in my opinion, street in the world.
  • Take a look outside Andradas, there are a lot of historical attractions.
  • On the street Padre chagas You will find many bars, restaurants and coffee houses.

What to see in 1 day

If I had one day in my beloved city of Porto Alegre, I would spend it just like this:

  • 10:00. Mercado Publico. We walk in the center, watch souvenirs, buy Brazilian coffee, seasonings and shimarrau.
  • 12:00. We have all-inclusive seafood at a Chinese restaurant "Restaurante Muralha da China".
  • 14:00. We are going to the park Redensau. We drink shimarrau and enjoy nature.
  • 16:00. We go to the museum Fundacao ibere camargo.
  • 17:00. Meet the sunset in Cafeteria Fundacao Ibere Camargo opposite the Guyaba river.
  • 19:00. Set off to watch football match to the arena of one of the clubs: Gremio or Inter.
  • 21:00. We are going to a party area Cidade baixato bar Cotipora drink capirin or beer with Brazilians. Next to the bar Cotipora we buy Pampa burger and take it to the hotel.
  • 01:00. We go to bed and enjoy the emotions and the city!

What to see in the surroundings

Gromadu (130 km)

In Brazil, in the south of the country in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, there lives a beautiful chocolate-magic city called Gromado. And a waterfall nearby, and mountains, chocolate factories, a chocolate rink (yes).

Ever had a chocolate rink? At least imagine that this is possible? Everything is possible in Gromado, even snow happens in July.

Of course, if you come from Kolyma or Yakutia - everything is possible, but I still wonder. Gromado is also known as the only city in southern Brazil to have heating, and the city to host the Brazilian Film Festival. Gromado is a very rich and safe city. Ferrari can stand parked at one of the restaurants. Why not?

Feliz (80 km)

A small town named "Happy." This is not a meta-form, the name of the city is translated from Portuguese in this way.

Felis, colonized in the 19th century by Austria and Germany, is located at a distance 80 km from Porto Alegre. If you like beer - there is a large beer festival in Brazil, everyone comes! Residents of the city are very friendly and always welcome guests for any occasion.

Food. What to try

Meat

In southern Brazil everyone eats meat.

In Porto Alegre, first try shurasko - A national meat dish cooked and fried on coals, such as our barbecue. All locals love Pampa burger. In the network of the same name you can try the meat property of the city.

Beverages

  • Unlike other cities, drinking is very popular here. "Chimarrao" (Shimarrau - Brazilian tea). Shimarrau is often compared to Argentinean mate. The mate is slightly sweeter in taste, and the cups of which the mate is drunk are smaller. To be honest, mate and shimarrau - as a comparison of Pele and Maradonna, everyone argues and remains in their opinions about who prefers.
  • I’ll start with a Kuyi - a wooden cup from which tea is drunk (it resembles a clay small pot, tapering downward, with a beautiful base), inside which is a long iron spoon, and not a simple spoon, but a golden one. Just kidding, a spoon with a hole on top - you can drink from it. Shimarrau - green tea is superimposed inside the Kuyi. All this is poured with boiling water and drunk through a tube-spoon. It looks interesting, thirst quenches with a bang.
  • If you like alcohol, drop in at any bar and have a drink Caipirinho - Brazilian vodka kashasa with sugar and lime.

Sweet

For dessert I recommend trying negrinos (brigadeiro - chocolates) and Brazilian Shurro - wafers in batter stuffed with chocolate or condensed milk, sprinkled with sweet crumbs and chocolate.

Favorite

The most delicious Brazilian dessert - acai com granola (acai with cereal), after which the teeth turn blue.

Reminds ice cream that you can drink and quench your thirst. Acai is a fruit native to Amazonia.

Recommended Places

Porto Alegre is a delicious city for food lovers. Unlike other cities in Brazil, PoA is very popular for establishments where you can pay a fixed price and there is as much as you like (buffet libre). It is much more difficult to find a place where there is no libre buffet than there is. Below are the places where you can eat as much as you want at very cultural prices.

Budgetary

Here you can have a cool meal for 3-5 USD per person.

  • Tudo Pelo Social,
  • Japesca Suchi,
  • Pampa Burger.

Mid level

The account in these places will be from 8 USD per person.

  • I really like the place Cotipora in the Cidade Baixa area. The restaurant is two-level, on the second floor in clear hot weather a glass roof opens for lovers of stars.
  • CAFETERIA Fundacao Ibere Camargo. I mentioned it above.
  • Govinda. A vegetarian restaurant for lovers of Indian cuisine, made in the Brazilian style. Tasty, not spicy, comfortable and homely.
  • Prato Verde, a restaurant serving vegetarian cuisine. Homemade food here.
  • Palácio do comércio restaurant. He is advised by the locals. Tasty and priced ok.

Expensive

The bill will be from 20 USD per person.

  • Chinese Restaurant Restaurante Muralha da China, located in the heart of the city, in the center. Rise to the second floor, and there shrimps look at you directly, take as much as you want and what you want ... fish of all possible varieties, sushi, salads, desserts, fruits, seafood.
  • Churrascaria Roda de Carreta. You can watch a theatrical performance from the locals (Gaushas - residents of the South) and eat meat a year in advance. Must go.

Holidays

Of course, the most interesting memory is Brazilian Carnival. It can be found in any city in the country - Porto Alegre is no exception.

The grand opening of the holiday always takes place on Saturday, seven weeks before Easter.

The Brazilian carnival is not only a striking spectacle with costumes and performances, which takes place four days in a specially designated place - sambodrome, but first of all - a competition of the best samba schools in Brazil. Schools are preparing a presentation on various topics about Brazil and not only, the procession of the best of the best takes place at the carnival.

Carnival ticket prices vary from the selected sector (like in the theater), the cheapest ones cost from 30 USD and above, but there is usually nothing to see because of the huge crowd. The best places, according to rumors, can be purchased from 1500 USD.

Interestingly, my Brazilian friends celebrate an extremely fierce struggle, even a battle between competitors for the title of carnival champion. Costumes are spoiled, music is stolen - it looks like an internal war, which is beyond the reach of an ordinary spectator. Not every Brazilian has the opportunity to get to the sambodrome, the reason for this is the high cost. Cheap places are not safe. Of course, thieves do not sleep, understanding how simple it is to leave a person without everything at mass events, and also these places need to be bought in whole groups, which is not always possible, and expensive places are expensive places. Therefore, the Brazilians go out into the streets of the city and arrange a procession for themselves along the central streets of the cities.

Everyone can take part in it. Residents and guests of the city have fun to the fullest during the carnival. One of my friends, who, incidentally, received a master’s diploma in Soviet history in Brazil, said and joked: "During the carnival days, even the mafia calms down and takes part in popular processions."

Security. What to watch out for

In general, crime rates are higher in Latin America than in Europe, for example. As for Brazil, it is safer in the south of the country than in the north. Porto Alegre is a small Europe, a calm city, with a large number of Germans, Italians, Poles, who once migrated to permanent residence.

However, in the parks after sunset do not need to appear. The park transforms into a place of sale of drugs, often prostitution, and becomes a place of easy money for thieves.

You also don’t need to ride a bicycle around the city at night - they often stop and take all valuables. On the central streets, as in any tourist city, it is important to look around and at your things constantly. To enter the buses, having looked after who is standing behind (often a thief sneaks up when getting on the bus, threatening with a knife and violence). And one more thing: at night you just don’t need to roam the streets in any city in Brazil - PoA is no exception.

Catching a car on the street - no, only an official taxi. In general, look around, do not carry a large number of valuable things, do not hold the phone in your hands and do not go at night. Didn't really scare you? Crimes are not committed at every step, local residents are good-natured and hospitable, just be careful.

Things to do

Enjoy the full buffet-style restaurants, get to know the locals and have tea at Shimarrau in Redensau Park, play soccer with Brazilians, drive to the Ibere Camargo Museum and watch the sunset on the Gazometro, eating shurros. Buzz. Of course, in Porto Alegre it is necessary and important to go see a match of one of the football teams: Inter or Gremio and, if you like nightlife, go ahead to any bar to drink beer or capirinha in the Cidade Baixa area.

Shopping and shops

If you want to buy souvenirs / fruits / products - Wellcome Tu Mercado Publico. You can see small souvenirs and go to small shops in the downtown area. When you want to choose a lot and for a long time, catch the 4 coolest shopping malls in the city. There is everything in large numbers!

  • Moinhos shopping,
  • Iguatemi,
  • Barra shopping,
  • Praia de Belas shopping.

Bars Where to go

After 18 pm, bars open in the most party district of the city - Cidade Baixa. Locals gather in big companies: they drink beer, watch a football match, go to different bars and just have fun. No matter which bar you go into, everything will be fine. Bars open at 18 pm and close at one or two nights. A bottle of beer will cost you 3-4 USD, an alcoholic cocktail will cost from 5 USD.

Places I like:

  • Cotipora,
  • Casa Azul,
  • Bar Pinguim (cheap and cheerful),
  • Boteco,
  • Dona Neusa,
  • Bar Apolinario.

Clubs and nightlife

Not a fan of nightclubs, but the most famous nightclubs are:

  • Opinião 34.
  • Dirty Old Man.

As a rule, the entertainment program in clubs starts from 20 pm and lasts until the very morning - hours to 5. Face control and a dress code, of course, are. The price of an admission ticket depends on the time you hit the club. Often, until 21 pm they start up for free, and give a drink as a gift. After the entrance fee is 7-15 USD per person (depending on the program in the club).

Souvenirs. What to bring as a gift

Mercado Publico (local market) is the best assistant when choosing a gift for loved ones.

What did I bring home from Porto Alegre?

  • Shimarrau tea with Kuyya. Will cost about 10 USD.
  • Brazilian coffee, 8-10 USD.
  • Cocoa and Chocolate, 5-20 USD.
  • Bottle of Cachashas (local vodka), 5-10 USD.
  • Local seasonings. From 2 USD. Hawayanas (spanking), 5-15 USD per pair.
  • Brazilian sweets "Garota", 7USD.
  • T-shirt, cap, sweatshirt with the inscription Brazil. From 10 USD per attribute.
  • Football lovers always buy t-shirts with the Inter and Gremio logos (two super clubs in the south of Brazil), from 10 USD apiece.
  • According to the mood / capabilities of the suitcase, you can take ripe fruits: mango / acai, for example. A few fruits will cost you 4-5 USD.

How to get around the city

The transport system in Porto Alegre, and indeed in Brazil in general, is not bad in my opinion. Move quietly around the city on buses. It’s safer to take a taxi in the evening. If you want to see the cities near Porto Alegre, the metro train will help you.

Taxi. What features exist

Do you know how to use the Uber taxi app? The best option for a given period of time. Two more popular apps in PoA: Easytaxi and 99taxi.

Official taxis are more expensive. If the trip Uber will cost 3-4 USD, then the minimum cost of a trip in an official taxi is 7-8 USD.

I repeat once again - in the morning, afternoon and early evening - it is very convenient and comfortable to ride a bus. After 20 pm it is better to call a taxi.

Buses

Bus stops are easy to find on the city streets, routes and timetables can be viewed right there. On the windshield of the bus you will see the route. If you are completely confused, you can always ask the driver if you sat down there.

Believe me, everything is extremely clear and it is not necessary to know Portuguese. Payment at the entrance, yes, is expensive (about 2 USD per trip), but convenient: with air conditioning, special places for children and disabled people. If you are lucky - there is a lounge with a TV in the usual public transport. Intercity buses (even if the entire route is only two hours) have a toilet and very comfortable seats.

Vehicle rental

I am not a motorist. For trips in the city, transport rental in my opinion is not needed. You will look for a parking longer and also pay a tidy sum. Try options in suitable cities of the country here.

As for moving to neighboring cities, Gromada and Feliz, it is easier to get on a comfortable bus. Private roads are paid. By car you have to fork out. Or use the services of fellow travelers. There is another option - hitchhiking (I drove Brazil from South to North, part of the way - hitchhiking).

If you are a crazy traveler, and without me you know everything. If not - such trips are not safe and more tiring, take the bus!

Porto Alegre - holidays with children

When to go with children:

  • If your child wants to get an education / internship at one of the best universities in Brazil (UFRGS).
  • Perhaps your family is a traveler who came to visit Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay in one trip.
  • If you plan to migrate to Brazil and are looking for the most comfortable city for the whole family.
  • If you brought your child to look at the Chocolate Barvikha.
  • If the purpose of your trip is to see Rio as a family, then see Rio as a family. Next time, take the whole family and come to the South of Brazil for at least two weeks.
