Why a careful motorist should not park on the promenade

Not so long ago, in Florence, near the famous Ponte Vecchio bridge, the embankment of the Arno River partially collapsed, as a result of which 20 cars parked on it moved down and plunged into the water. The cause of the incident was soil erosion, provoked by groundwater or a pipe break in the water supply system.

The mayor of the city personally made a statement, officially declaring that no one was hurt, but the losses were colossal.

The length of the formed pit reached about 200 meters. In order to warn residents from further subsidence of the ground and to understand what had happened, the traffic on the embankment was completely blocked, and all rescue services went to the scene.
