How to build wooden ships

After visiting the yacht port "Sands", our part of the expedition visited the shipyard of the wooden shipbuilding "Varyag". It is located near the port in a large hangar. Varyag is a unique (if not the only one) enterprise of its kind, here they are engaged in the design and construction of wooden ships: sea cruise sailing yachts and training sailboats, pleasure sailing motor boats, traveling and tourist boats, fishing bots, YL type boats -2, YAL-4, YAL-6, pleasure sailing and rowing boats, traditional folk boats “Soyma”, “Kizhanka”, “Finka”, etc.

One of the main directions is the construction of replica vessels stylized as old sailing and steam ships. In the process of construction are used:

  • traditional and modern technologies and materials;
  • equipment of vessels with domestic and imported equipment from leading manufacturers;
  • author's design of interior and exterior decoration.

At the entrance to the hangar, I immediately saw a woodcarver who was turning such a head here - the bow decoration of the ship.

Over the 20 years of the shipyard’s activities, several dozen motor and sail-motor ships, several hundred boats and boats were built, including:

  • copies of historical sailing ships of the XIV - XVIII centuries;
  • Russian sea and river boats and plows of the XI-XV centuries;
  • copies of the boats of Peter I and Catherine the Great for the museums of Tsarskoye Selo and Pereslavl-Zalessky;
  • copies of Viking ships for Vyborg;
  • floating models of old sailboats and rowing vessels for the filming of the English series Hornblower and the Russian film Passenger directed by Stanislav Govorukhin.

On the stocks of the shipyard is another ship. The shipyard has enough orders, they don’t sit without work. Ships are made not only for customers from Russia, but also from abroad, so they can be found in England, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Finland, the Caribbean and the Canary Islands.

The wooden shipbuilding shipyard Varyag is one of the few enterprises where the traditions of domestic wooden shipbuilding are carefully preserved and developed.

To the right with the orange sides is a tourist boat of the Grumant-30T project. Designed for lovers of long sea voyages and relaxation on the water.

The Askold-65 project sailing and motor vessel is intended for use as a pleasure craft in inland waters.

The appearance of the vessel is an attempt to reconstruct the Russian river boat of the XV century. It was on such a vessel that the Tver merchant Athanasius Nikitin could begin his famous “Cruise for Three Seas”.

Next to Askold, another ship is being assembled.

In the office of "Varyag" we were told about already completed projects. Many private customers who ask to build a replica of some historical ship always choose a legend for it, for example, to lure tourists))

What else pleased the office is the office furniture, all the hand-made from the array, according to individual sizes)

On the table is a new ship project.

They draw inspiration from everywhere.

Here is such an excursion.
