The inhabitants of this island are constantly in mortal danger

The Japanese island of Aogashima is essentially a volcano on which people are not afraid to live. The island is 3.5 km long, 2.5 km wide, and it is located in the Philippine Sea.

The island was formed at the time of the eruption of at least four underwater volcanoes, so that on its territory there are a huge number of cliffs originating from volcanic magma.

The peak of Otonbu on Aogashima is located at an altitude of 423 meters and is considered the highest point of the island.

The climate here is humid subtropical, in addition, additionally heated by a warm Kuroshio stream. Therefore, we can say that it is much warmer here than in the main territory of Japan.

Thanks to this peculiar subtropical paradise, this place is filled with a wide variety of plants, wild birds and animals.
The island settlement has the same name as the island itself, and is about 170 people. In 2009, a little more people lived here - 205 people.

Although the volcano is a serious threat to the life of an already small population, people nevertheless are not in a hurry to leave Aogashima: they are fishing and farming. However, there are also tourists and lovers of spearfishing, whose arrival brings residents the opportunity to earn extra money.

Due to the small population of this place, there is only one school, children in it are taught up to the age of 14.

It is extremely difficult to name the exact date when the first settlers appeared on this volcanic island. It is only known that this happened many centuries ago.

The last time the local volcano erupted at the end of the 18th century, but it was such a powerful process that many locals could not escape. At least half a century passed before people returned to Aogashima again.
