Victims of progress: changes in the structure of the skull occur due to smartphones in people

While scientists and the public were arguing about whether the excessive enthusiasm for smartphones affects people's mental health, it turned out that the era of mobile phones has led to physiological changes. Australian scientists have recorded changes in the structure of skull bones in young people, and, in their opinion, the reason may be the fact that modern people spend more and more time with a smartphone in their hands.

Researchers analyzed x-rays of the skull bones of 1,200 patients. All of them were quite young people, their age ranged from 18 to 30 years. Scientists were surprised that in 41% were found abnormal changes in the bones of the skull in the back of the head. A significant proportion of young people observe the formation of a bone process in the place where the cervical ligaments and muscles are located. According to doctors, the maximum length of the fixed processes is 3 centimeters, but most of the formations had a length within 1 centimeter.

How are the strange changes in the back of the head and the use of smartphones connected? According to Australian experts, the unnatural position of the person’s head led to such consequences while he was looking at the screen of his smartphone, holding it in his hands. The human head is tilted forward, which leads to muscle strain and contributes to the development of physiological abnormalities.

Doctors note that usually these changes occur in older people and are related to age-related changes. But in the case of young people, such formations are most likely associated with the widespread use of smartphones in the modern world. By themselves, they do not carry any danger, but they are signs of irreversible changes occurring in the body. It is possible that their further development will somehow affect health. Scientists intend to test their hypothesis by involving more people in research, which will be done in the near future.
