How an Icelandic ghost ship ended up on the shore

You expect to see a ship standing on the ground in some Aralsk, where the sea has long gone beyond the horizon, but not in Iceland. Therefore, when such a post-apocalyptic picture opens from the road, many questions immediately arise: How? Where from? Why? When? Either he was thrown here by a storm, or flew at speed. But both options are wrong. Want to know what kind of ship it is and how it turned out here?

It was a sailing ship equipped with a powerful steam engine.

Its steel hull had a reinforced structure to cross the ice fields of Antarctica, where there was a whaling industry.

For its long and interesting life, the ship has been in many hands and resembled the flags of different countries. Until finally, after the Second World War, he was not in Iceland.

There Globe IV was also used as a whaling ship.

But after the introduction of restrictions on this fishery, the owner was forced to switch to catching herring. In 1963, he renamed it Garðar BA64.

After decades of faithful service to its owners, the Gardar BA64 was deemed to be decommissioned in 1981.

Instead of cutting the ship into metal, the owner decided in his own way to thank him.

The old ship was towed ashore and left there forever and ever.

And for 37 years, BA64 has been pleasing tourists with its colorful look.

The plating in many places has already rotted through, but the thick nasal sheets of metal that can withstand the onslaught of ice will not give up for many more years.
