The world's largest wind farm built in the UK

Last September, a significant event took place for the entire alternative energy industry of our planet - the opening of the world's largest wind farm in the coastal zone of the Irish Sea. UK-owned wind farm called Walney extension It has a capacity of 659 MW, which makes it possible to provide electricity to 600,000 houses.

Wind energy, along with other types of alternative energy, is becoming increasingly popular in the modern world. The increase in energy consumption, the instability of prices in the global hydrocarbon market and the environmental problems of traditional energy have led to the rapid development of wind energy not only in the UK or Germany, but also in India, China, the USA and many other countries of the world.

Built off the coast of the UK, the station belongs to the category of offshore wind farms (from English offshore - "at some distance from the coast"). This type of wind farm is located in the waters of the seas, and it is becoming increasingly popular, especially in Europe. Firstly, the land possibilities are not unlimited, and the deployment of huge wind farms requires the alienation of significant areas. Secondly, the wind speed above water is higher than over land, and ultimately such power plants will be more efficient.

The largest wind farm in the world has an area of 144 square meters. km and includes 87 turbines of two manufacturing companies: companies MHI Vestas and Siemen. These are the dimensions that MHI Vestas turbines have in comparison with some of the famous man-made objects on our planet.

The construction of this wind farm was carried out by a Danish company Orsted, and its construction took 1.5 years. It is worth noting that the construction of offshore wind farms is a rather technologically complicated process that requires expensive specialized equipment.

But, despite the large financial costs during the construction phase, experts are confident that such wind farms have a great future.
