Scientists have found in which countries the highest level of alcohol consumption

Despite the fact that the production and use of alcohol-containing drinks as an integral part of the cultures of many peoples of our planet originated in ancient times, today alcohol is considered one of the factors that increase the risk of premature death and the development of serious diseases. For this reason, experts regularly monitor data on the level of alcohol consumption in different regions of the world.

American scientists analyzed data on the amount of alcohol consumed by residents of 195 countries and compiled some interesting maps. The results of the study were published in the online medical publication The Lancet.

Specialists processed the data for the period from 1990 to 2016, and the research involved a population aged 15 to 95 years, which was divided into 5 age groups. Scientists also collected separate data on the male and female population of the planet. The main object of analysis was indicators of mortality and morbidity due to alcohol abuse, as well as other statistical materials. Since the percentage of alcohol in different drinks is significantly different, for the convenience of analysis, scientists have proposed a conventional unit of alcohol, which is equal to 10 grams of ethyl alcohol. This amount of alcohol is contained in approximately 100 ml of red wine. According to the results of the study, maps were compiled reflecting the level of alcohol consumption in different countries of the world.

Men are expected to be ahead of women in the amount of alcohol consumed. According to studies, Romania, Luxembourg, Portugal, Ukraine and Lithuania became the leading countries for alcohol consumption among men. In addition to them, a high level was shown by such countries as Estonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Vietnam. Among the leading countries for the use of alcohol among women were Ukraine, Andorra, Luxembourg, Belarus, Sweden, Denmark and Ireland.
