GMO bananas are already grown in Africa: why genetics created them

Despite the fact that scientists continue to convince everyone that genetically modified plants are absolutely safe for health and extremely beneficial, the majority of the world's population is extremely wary of them. And while many countries prohibit the cultivation of such genetic miracles on their territory, the African country of Uganda decided on a bold experiment to breed genetically modified bananas.

Bananas are affordable and common food for the poor in African countries, including Uganda. But at the same time, the population of this country, especially children, suffers from a lack of food in vitamin A. Vitamins of group A are very important for health, and their lack causes not only a decrease in visual acuity in the body, but also a general deterioration in health status until growth is slowed down and problems with the immune system.

As a result of painstaking work, a variety was obtained that has a high content of nutrients, including vitamins of group A. The variety bred by geneticists differs from traditional bananas not only in its vitamin A content, but also in color: its flesh has a golden-orange color.

Now bananas are undergoing field trials directly in Uganda, and if everything goes well, then in 2021, a new variety will be planted on the territory of this African country, designed to defeat the lack of vitamin A.
