Torgai geoglyphs: traces of a mysterious civilization in the steppes of Kazakhstan

Geoglyphs, drawings of geometric figures or living creatures, drawn on the surface of the earth, can be found in different corners of the planet. The most famous of them are the geoglyphs of the Nazca plateau in Peru. But, it turns out, mysterious objects were discovered on the territory of Kazakhstan.

Torgai geoglyphs were found in the Kostanai region on the territory of the Torgai trough in 2007. Like most such drawings, the Torgai geoglyphs were discovered from a height, or rather, when studying satellite images of the planet's surface. In total, more than 50 different geoglyphs, which are geometric figures, were identified in the territory of this region. Periodically, news appears about the discovery of new geoglyphs in the steppes of the Kostanay region. These are squares, crosses, lines, circles and a special type of geoglyphs, called by the researchers "Torgai three-beam swastika".

Immediately after the discovery, an archaeological expedition was sent to the Torgai Trough region. In the summer of 2007, and then in the summer of 2008, studies of the Torgai three-beam swastika geoglyph and two more square-shaped geoglyphs were carried out. It was possible to find out that the geoglyphs were built in the form of embankments, the height of which varies from 0.3 to 1.5 meters. Outside, the drawings are surrounded by a moat, a depth of 1 meter and a width of 8-12 meters.

The dimensions of most of the Torgai geoglyphs of the Kostanay region are from 90 to 300 meters. The exact age of geoglyphs in the Kostanay region is still impossible to determine, as well as which civilization created them and why. The only thing the researchers are sure of is that the Torgai geoglyphs were built no later than the Middle Ages.

Despite several research expeditions and great interest from the scientific community, there are still more blank spots than discoveries around the Torgai geoglyphs.
